Chiropractic Education

Doctors of chiropractic receive more training in anatomy and physiology while physicians received more training in public health, pharmacology and surgery.

Chiropractic colleges focus on chiropractic principles, diagnosis, pathology, orthopedics, musculoskeletal treatments, physiologic therapeutics and nutrition.

These four areas:

  • manipulative/adjustive techniques
  • spinal analysis,
  • physical/clinical laboratory diagnosis
  • diagnostic imaging

account for more than half of the chiropractic education in clinical sciences. During their internship, Doctors of Chiropractic complete two years of hands-on clinical experience focusing on manipulation/adjustment as the primary treatment procedure.

Studies show that chiropractic students receive more training than their medical counterparts in the following areas: anatomy, physiology, bacteriology, diagnosis, X-ray and orthopedics.

It is important to note that MD’s also complete an internship, learning ER procedures, drug uses and interactions and side effects, and general surgery. Doctors of chiropractic, by law, cannot prescribe drugs, do not handle ER situations, and are not licensed to practice surgery. Some states do allow chiropractic physicians to perform obstetrics and gynecology.
